Popular Mechanics Survival Issue

I bought this yesterday. That is what happens when people let me wander into the magazine and/or book aisles. Most women I know would wander away with Cosmo or something lol. O.k. back on subject now, dh's thoughts on this issue was don't waste your money. He got to look at it first so later on last night I took a good read into it. Some of the articles are short and cover back ups for your gadgets. One of the articles briefly mentions ham radios.
There is a larger article, on Urban Homesteaders which covers a community planting and having animals in vacant lot, along with an off the grid community still going since the 70's.
If interested some of it is online here.

Sometimes you just have to be thankful.

It seems that the world has just gone crazy some days. Just walking outside can give you cause to be thankful though:

I don't know what these are called but the birds plant these for us. They are beautiful.

This is my lemon tree. It was planted here by the original owners of the house quite a while ago. Usually we might get a lemon or two but this year I put extra effort and it blossomed twice this year and the geckos love running around in it. I have over 40 lemons on it now.

Here are the two avocado trees I planted in the greenhouse. I am extremely thankful that they sprung up after three months of watering dirt, specially since my husband said they wouldn't grow.

This is obviously not my picture but the best gift today was the Blue Birds of Happiness starting their migratory path and came into my yard this morning.

Backwoods Home Update

Backwoods Home will be even harder to find on magazine racks now that another distributor has gone under. So if you have been having a hard time getting an issue, you might want to consider subscribing or reading what you can on the website.

The current issue, #119, has some interesting, helpful articles. There is Outdoor Canning Party, By Jennifer Grahovac. Also, Preparing For Hunting Season, by Massad Ayoob and not to forget the series Coming Of American Dictatorship, Part XI; The Tenth Amendment Movement.

Those are just some of the articles you can read online. I did not forget Jackie Clay and she has a good article on how you can still live the good life. Claire Wolfe has a good article on pooling resources and living in a type of survival commune. And if you ever wondered how to hunt and cook squirrel......

The next issue will be a nice big anniversary issue, maybe we'll get to see Dorothy Ainsworth in this one. I almost forgot! Jackie Clay's canning book is OUT! I'll be ordering it next week and posting all about it.

Declutter, Then You Might Have Room

We've talked about where to put your preps in small living spaces. But how much STUFF do you have? If you clear out one space, does it fill up with STUFF? That is a problem I have. I got a freezer cheap because I friend let me borrow theirs and the space they had it in filled up with....STUFF.
How much does all this STUFF cost you? Well there is time, energy and money. There is loss of concentration while digging through STUFF and frustration when you can't find what you were looking for. I know I had xyz but I guess I don't so I'll buy another one. Fast forward a month, a year, 5 years, and you have 5 or 10 xyz's because you couldn't find the first one, or the second....
I'm not telling you to pass up the best sale in the century to stock up on whatever widgets you want but it has to be organized. I'm guilty of yarn, fabric, kitchen gadgets and books. I can tell you right now I have about 5 or 10 cookbooks that I only make one recipe out of.
Hopefully this weekend I will be making three piles of STUFF. One for donations, one for trash and one for ebay. This way, I hope, I can finally get my storage room and other areas of the house cleaned out.
I went to a thrift store recently and continuously asked myself, do I need it and where would I put it. I left empty handed.
So, try to get rid of some STUFF and reclaim wasted time!

Catching up

The Schools here are showing the speech today. I sent notes in to opt out my children and a letter to administrator.
The swine flu reported cases were published and it's funny how it is all out in the county and in none of the heavier populated cities of the county. I know a few in my town that have had it.
Lately I have been going through seeds to try and decide what will go in the ground for fall. It's a great thing to live in this region and be able to have extended planting and I am experimenting with what will do well in pots in the greenhouse. I have until November to get the holes in the greenhouse fixed.
I also have been growing avocado plants in the greenhouse. I have to look up more on those to see if they have to permanently live in there or not but so far they are doing wonderful!
